With the help of a front-glazed cassette system, it delivers a bold design concept.

The project involved the construction of a middle school building for Year 7 and 8 students at Brighton Secondary School, southwest of Adelaide. The state-of-the-art facility includes learning spaces, STEM laboratories, a gallery and forum area, along with breakout rooms and display areas.

The southwest, southeast and southern facades were designed to create a curtain wall effect using Alspec’s Hastings 550 Front Glazed Plant On System with a customised cassette system. In this process, the glazing system was fixed directly to the steel members with special glazing adaptors, both horizontally and vertically. The third southern façade, which spanned from the ground to the top of the building, required further adaptation to allow for self-drainage. The complete glazing solution required a high level of engineering to meet structural integrity, performance and compliance needs.

Inside the complex, the learning spaces were divided into study areas with a combination of fixed glazing and Alspec’s Hawkesbury Top Hung Sliding doors. Used as room dividers, the large doors were configured in double and single stacking, enabling spaces to be easily modified to suit specific learning needs or activities.

For the building’s perimeter, 35mm awning windows were included to provide access to natural ventilation, while being safety-compliant with appropriate fall-prevention opening restrictions. With their overlapping internal and external seals, the awning windows achieve superior weather performance while maximising natural light and airflow.
