The Locker Room, Homebush NSW

Resembling a cross between a spaceship and a 1950s roller café, there’s no doubt that The Locker Room in the Sydney Olympic Park district lives up to the word ‘iconic’.

The four-level liquor and gaming venue is a testament to the impact of stunning design and quality finishes.

But it’s not just aesthetics that make this new-build so compelling; it’s the keen focus on sustainability at the core of the project’s vision. The aim was to achieve a minimum 5-star Green Star performance rating – an aim that was absolutely realised.

Altis Architecture was awarded the brief after they’re outstanding design concepts garnered them the win during a competition held by Sydney Olympic Park.

A massive canopy roof extends beyond the building, defining external public spaces whilst integrating with the surrounding landscape. All levels are interconnected by a sinuous cascading stair from the entry foyer. And top-hung sliding doors with floor tiles cut into the floor tracks provide a seamless transition from inside to the outside of the building.

Challenges included ensuring the curved and suspended window and door frames – fitted with huge expanses of curved glass – were of the highest quality while reducing solar heat and cold transfer to ensure compliance with the ambitious sustainability goals.

To overcome these challenges, the builder consulted the experts at ArchSystem Fabrication. Given the project’s commitment to design excellence and sustainability, they chose window and door products from Alspec.

The result is a masterpiece of pragmatism and aesthetics that will stand the test of time.
