Corpus Christi College Gymnasium, WA

Showcasing Alspec’s window glazing and commercial door solutions

An award-winning college gymnasium in Western Australia is providing the ideal platform to highlight Alspec’s® high performance range of aluminium window glazing and commercial door solutions.

Completed in June this year, the Corpus Christi College gymnasium in Bateman, near Perth, incorporated a range of glazing elements which impressed the judges of the 2016 WA design awards.

School sporting facilities can present several design and performance challenges, requiring large expanses of glazing to provide natural lighting, while being durable and flexible to accommodate sporting and other indoor educational activities. With these needs in mind, Alspec® were able to provide their adaptable range of commercial framing products to contribute to an outstanding facility for the college.

The gymnasium exterior design featured large spans of structural steelwork with segmented windows, requiring componentry which could be adaptable while meeting performance needs such as withstanding high wind loads. Alspec’s® McArthur Centre Pocket Glazing System provided the ideal solution for this environment. Centre pocket framing involves the glass being slid into the “pocket” provided by the aluminium frame, resulting in glazing beads only being needed on one horizontal side. This gives glazing not only a cleaner appearance, but improved security and lower manufacturing and installation costs.

The ability of the McArthur system to accommodate a variety of glass thicknesses made it the perfect complement to the Low-E glass which had been selected for the glazing. Low-E glass has the properties of filtering UV rays and minimising solar gain, thereby enhancing the building’s overall energy efficiency.

With its self-draining sub sills to prevent any potential for water ingress, the McArthur system will ensure the facility remains protected from the elements. Utilised by architects for its attractive appearance, the McArthur system is also favoured by builders for its ease of installation.

Within the building’s interior, the designers selected Alspec’s® Swan 45mm Commercial Shopfront Doors to provide flexibility for the classroom spaces. With hinged, sliding or pivoted options, the versatile Swan door has been used to facilitate a modular classroom environment located on the building’s upper level.

Back at ground level, the Hawkesbury® Commercial Multi-Fold Doors range were incorporated because of their ability to span high floor to ceiling spaces. The perimeter framing of the Hawkesbury® doors are specially designed with commercial-grade door stiles featuring top-rolling operation and inward or outward stacking as required. Combined with Weatherseal technology, these incredibly stable doors will keep out wind and rain when securely fastened, and operate effortlessly when needed to be opened or closed.

With the successful build of the new gymnasium complete, all that’s left now is for the college’s community and students to put impressive facility to good use and enjoy its many features.
