Visitors to the Gold Coast will be hard pressed to miss the eye-catching exterior of the recently completed new Kurrawa Surf Club at Broadbeach. With its gold-hued aluminium louvres supplied by Alspec, the building is an impressive new landmark for the popular beach destination.  Built adjacent to the Surf Club’s former building (now replaced with parkland), the three-storey development provides a welcome home for the community’s surf lifesaving activities and equipment on ground level. Meanwhile on the two upper levels members and visitors have access to an expansive restaurant, bar and function facilities which can cater for up to 400 people.

While Alspec’s fixed louvres have been used to create an interesting form for the building, they also serve a practical purpose. By protecting the western face from the afternoon sun, the louvres will improve the building’s thermal performance, reducing heat and glare, ultimately contributing to a more comfortable interior for occupants.

Fixed louvres are available in multiple blade and shape configurations and can be powder coated or anodised. While both options allow for customised colours, anodising was chosen for this project for two key reasons. Firstly, anodising has allowed the louvres to be produced with their distinctive metallic appearance and warm golden tone. Secondly, in the anodising process the blades receive an oxidised surface coating which is extremely resistant to corrosion, easy to clean and won’t fade in sunlight. These qualities make it the perfect solution for the extremes of the surfside environment. At night time, a creative lighting arrangement will ensure the building’s distinguishing feature maintains its visual appeal.

By utilising the elegant good looks of a customised Alspec fixed louvre system, the Kurrawa Surf Club’s new facility is set to attract just as much attention as the picturesque beach alongside which it is situated.
