Cairns Aquarium & Marine Research Centre, Cairns QLD

Award-winning design for this major new tourism facility in Cairns, North Queensland

The spectacular blue waters of the Great Barrier Reef have been reflected in the award-winning design of a major new tourism facility in Cairns, North Queensland. The recently opened Cairns Aquarium and Marine Research Centre has been awarded the Queensland Master Builders Association "Project of the Year" for Far North Queensland. The aquarium, which is now home to more than 15,000 aquatic animals, fish and plants, features a striking entrance constructed with panes of sapphire blue glass and Alspec’s high performance window framing solutions.

In constructing the facilities’ distinctive façade, Alspec’s ecoWall 225 Flush Glazed Commercial Framing system was selected for its acknowledged structural integrity and capacity to span large spaces. In this installation it has been used in a spectacular outward sloping (at an angle of 11 degrees) façade 9m high. With reinforced subheads and mullion anti-buckling technology, the ecoWall 225 is ideal for enclosing large commercial foyers and can accommodate single and double glazing options as required.

Designed to showcase the bio-diversity of one of Australia’s most famous attractions, the Cairns Aquarium is providing visitors to the region the ability to experience the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef from the comfort of a world-class venue.
