Highgate Primary School, WA

These light-filled learning spaces showcase Alspec window and door framing solutions.

A modern classroom facility constructed next to historic heritage buildings is winning awards for its design which references the school’s more than 120 years of history. First opened in 1895, Highgate Primary School’s original buildings remain in use, now sitting comfortably alongside the recently completed two-storey Sandri Building. A range of Alspec window and door framing solutions have been utilised in the development to deliver light-filled learning spaces equipped with durable componentry which will withstand the demands of the high-use educational environment.

Recipient of two Western Australia design awards and with international awards in the pipeline[1], the architecturally designed development features eight teaching classrooms as well as versatile larger spaces which can be utilised for a variety of teaching situations.

With an architectural goal to prioritise natural light over artificial, View-Max Commercial Sliding Windows were the optimum window framing solution. With their superior thermal, weather and acoustic properties, the View-Max windows were ideal to team with McArthur Centre Pocket 150mm Framing to deliver a distinctly robust construction.  Featuring centre pocket glazing, where the glass is slid into the "pocket" provided by the aluminium frame, the McArthur system has the advantage of providing security benefits. While the sliding View-Max option was selected for this build, the windows are also available in a double-hung option and either configuration is able to accommodate up to 16mm double glazed units.

In other locations, where awning windows were required, ASW awning windows were selected. They feature overlapping internal and external seals, providing superior weather performance, and can be operated by lockable chain winders or cam handles to ensure safe window openings.

With durability and reliability a key concern, doors were selected from the Hawkesbury and Swan Alspec product ranges. Hawkesbury Multi-Fold doors were installed on both levels, providing the ability to effortlessly link the interiors to adjacent outdoor spaces. Smooth operation is ensured by the top-rolling mechanism while Weatherseal technology will keep wind, rain and cold air from entering the rooms when doors are closed.

For hinged or pivoted door applications, Swan 45mm Commercial Doors were selected. Developed specifically for the high-use demands of the commercial environment, the Swan doors feature stronger sash construction which will easily withstand the rigours of heavy daily use in the classroom environment.

With more than 650 pupils now attending the school, this award-winning building will provide a valuable new learning space to serve the future needs of the school for many years to come.
