Whale Beach, Sydney NSW

Suiting both everyday living and large family gatherings, this Whale Beach home can be adapted to meet the needs of any occasion.

Front to back, inside and out, the design of this new house in Whale Beach has maximised the available light, space and views to deliver a home perfectly suited to a diverse range of family needs, while drawing on sustainable design and construction principles.

The architect and construction firms behind the development both focus on ensuring sustainable principles feature in their projects. Sue Connor Architects worked with Sustainable Design + Construct to deliver a home which responds to the site with a small building footprint, is comfortable to live in and is energy efficient. Sustainable principles include incorporating passive solar design, intelligent use of building materials to minimise waste, cross ventilation, minimal site disturbance, minimal ongoing maintenance and the use of non-toxic building materials.

The architectural brief for the Whale Beach site was to create a home that would suit both everyday living and large family gatherings. A key factor in delivering to this brief was the decision to transparently connect the indoor and outdoor areas with large three-panel Alspec ProGlide High Performance Sliding Doors. The oversized glazing panels achievable with ProGlide doors ensure the floor-to-ceiling ocean outlook has been maximised whether they are open or closed. In addition, a central, glass-framed stairwell provides a consistent connection between the internal areas, linking the individual spaces and further maximising the infusion of light.

For fixed-window glazing requirements throughout the property, Alspec’s McArthur Evo 101.6mm Centre-Pocket framing was installed. The commercial framing system is particularly robust and comes with excellent weathering credentials including self-draining sub sills. While the home predominantly utilises sliding doors, when hinged doors were required, Swan Evo 45mm Commercial Doors were selected. The versatile and durable Swan doors can accommodate a range of glass thicknesses, be used in hinged, pivoted or sliding configurations, and also feature the clean lines characteristic of centre-pocket framing.

With light maximised from every angle, the end result is an airy, spacious and inviting location for family living and entertaining, built around sound principles of sustainable design and construction. Whether seeking an intimate winter-time space for cosy dining, or an expansive area to host a large indoor-outdoor summer gathering, the occupants will find themselves spoilt for choice with the home’s range of adaptable spaces.
