Pridham Hall, University of SA
A new multi-purpose sports and social centre at University of South Australia has utilised Alspec aluminium framing products in its eye-catching angular design.
The University of South Australia has an exciting new focal point with the recent completion of a multi-purpose centre at its City West campus. Built to cater for the many diverse social, cultural and sporting activities at the university, Pridham Hall’s eye-catching angular design features striking floor to ceiling glass facades constructed utilising Alspec’s ecoWALL 225 framing solution.
The soaring angled entrance area and perimeter facades have taken advantage of the ecoWALL 225’s unique technical specifications to frame the expansive heights and spaces. Known for its exceptionally robust construction, the ecoWALL framing system is designed specifically to cater for commercial foyer applications such as the entry area of the centre which required full length glass. The framing system’s strength comes from reinforced subheads and mullion anti-buckling technology, which delivers a complete structural system without the need for additional steel supports.
Meanwhile access to the diverse range of spaces at the facility has been provided by Torrens 45mm commercial doors. A durable option for a high use facility such as this centre, Torrens doors can be configured in sliding, pivoted or hinged options. They can accommodate a large range of glass thicknesses in single or double glazed options and are compatible with a full range of accessories such as locks, handles and door closers as required for each application.
The multi-purpose Pridham Hall is the joint result of a partnership between local firms JPE Design Studio and Jam Factory, and Norwegian firm Snøhetta. It is constructed around the core hall space which is utilised as multi-use indoor sports courts or converted into an impressive function centre capable of seating up to 1800 people when required. While the hall provides the ideal environment for significant university events such as graduation ceremonies, the venue’s flexible spaces provide year-round facilities for the thousands of students who study at the campus. The lower level is home to a 25m swimming pool, rock climbing wall and well-equipped gymnasium, while the upper levels accommodate a variety of function rooms to cater for social gatherings and office facilities.
