Assemblage House, Suffolk Park, NSW

This functional home embraces the sub-tropical seaside environment to offer a diverse range of open plan living and relaxation spaces for this NSW family.

With warm summers, mild winters and the beach on the doorstep, this home on NSW’s northern coast has been designed to interact with and embrace the natural qualities of the sub-tropical location. Bordered by sand dunes, nature reserves and just metres from the ocean, this family home in Suffolk Park has been created to emphasise the indoor-outdoor living environment while being well protected and easy to maintain.

The home has been built over two levels, with two pavilions surrounding a pool and garden area. Designed by architect Space Studio, the home was formed by off-setting a timber-clad bedroom pavilion against a spacious steel and glass living pavilion, both oriented to best provide privacy and natural protection from sun and wind.

Defined by a wall of openable glass, the family living portion of the home is connected to the outdoor entertaining and pool areas by an expansive set of ProGlide High Performance Sliding Doors. The doors enable the open plan kitchen, living and dining areas to be visually and physically connected to the lush greenery of the gardens, while giving easy access to the outdoor entertaining and pool areas.

The sliding doors have been complemented by the addition of Invisi-Gard stainless steel security screens, installed within Alspec Altitude door frames. Combining the strength of marine grade 316 stainless steel with the clean lines and sleek appearance of Altitude aluminium doors, the Invisi-Gard screens provide uninterrupted clarity of views, as well as security features. The corrosion resistant marine grade mesh ensures durability and performance in the seaside environment while the unique patented fastening system ensures the screens deliver maximum security protection.

To take advantage of cooling ocean breezes, Air-Flo Glass Louvre systems were incorporated into many of the home’s rooms. Maximising natural cooling and ventilation without compromising light or views, louvre systems are a practical solution to provide passive cooling in a seaside location. The flexible systems can also be paired with security and fly screen options as required.

With their contrasting Dulux Zeus Black finish, the Alspec framing products selected for this home provide a striking accent to the cool concrete and warm wood features, delivering a stylish, low maintenance home from which the family can enjoy the idyllic beachside location.
