Bombora Apartments, Cronulla, NSW
Rising to the challenge, Alspec’s ProGlide High Performance Sliding doors become the perfect complement to the curved balconies of these luxury beachside apartments.
When an innovative architect designs a unique building, it can take more than standard construction methods and materials to bring that vision to life. For these luxury apartments in Cronulla, Alspec’s ProGlide High Performance sliding doors were cleverly adapted to add curved sliding doors to the development’s uniquely shaped balconies.
The five-level residential apartment complex occupies a prime location just one street from popular Cronulla Beach, 30km south of Sydney. Comprising two towers attached by a central lobby, the ovoidal forms of the structure were an architectural response to the shape of the site, which is narrower to the south and wider to the north. The creation recently earned Vic Lake Architects first place in the “Architecture Multiple Residence” category of the Asia Pacific International Property Awards.
Designed to optimise access to the sweeping ocean views, the curved balconies required sliding doors which would allow the free-flowing living and dining areas to merge seamlessly with the outdoor areas. To address the curved requirements, fabricator Dyna-Fix opted to adapt Alspec’s ProGlide High Performance Sliding Doors. Successfully trialled in a previous project, the hybrid system combines ProGlide sliding doors with Henderson top tracks. The end result allows the floor-to-ceiling doors to travel along a curved track, to complete a gently faceted glazed façade when closed.
With the proximity to the sea also a consideration, ProGlide doors come amply equipped to deal with the rigours of the marine environment. Their robust construction from heavy duty aluminium and proven all-weather protection features ensures dependable and enduring operation. ProGlide doors can be configured into up to 4 panels stacking in each direction and can accommodate up to 28mm double glazed units to meet thermal and acoustic specifications.
For fixed framing needs across the project, Alspec’s McArthur 101.6mm Centre Pocket Framing was installed. Popular in both commercial and residential environments for its sharp unbroken lines, the McArthur framing provides excellent weather protection plus the security benefits that come with centre pocket style framing.
The project recently featured in BuiltView, the industry magazine of the AGWA and NSSA, Issue 6, 2020.
