Sliding doors bring a breath of fresh air to this older Adelaide home

A renovation project integrating indoor and outdoor living areas with sliding doors has breathed new life into this 1900s Adelaide home.

Despite being previously modernised with an open plan living extension, the new owners of this St Peter’s home felt there was something lacking in their new living spaces. Enter the team from Arborcrest who used Alspec’s ProGlide High Performance Sliding Doors to give the home exactly what the young family needed: a large open plan kitchen, living and dining area which can be effortlessly integrated with the leafy outdoor entertaining area.

Relocating from interstate, the clients purchased the home knowing they would want to make some changes to make it better suit the way they liked to live. The kitchen, dining and living space was already open plan, but the existing windows and doors made the outdoor area less accessible and left it under-utilised. They liked the garden views and wanted to highlight that aspect in bringing the two environments closer together.

Working with the client to determine the right door solution for the space, bi-fold doors were considered, but ultimately ruled out because of the space they occupy when stacked and the number of visible upright panels they feature when closed. Instead they chose a four-panel sliding door, stacking to one side, which would deliver the largest opening and minimum obstruction of the garden views when closed. Alspec’s ProGlide High Performance Sliding Doors were the ideal aluminium sliding door product, given their large panels easily had the capacity to span the 6.4m space.

In just a few days Arborcrest completed the project by removing the old framing, installing a new structural supporting beam, fitting the ProGlide sliding doors and a matching Centor fly screen. The Centor screen was ideal for this project because it retracts completely out of the way when not in use, and provides an effective barrier to insects without compromising the views when closed.

The completed look draws on the contrast between the dramatic black powder coat finish of the doors and the existing polished concrete floors and red brick exterior. Arborcrest continued the theme with their final styling of the area including furnishings from Domo. Key pieces were a statement red couch, coffee table and lamp for the interior and outdoor furniture including a dining setting and arm chair.

The renovation of this home with modern aluminium sliding doors is a classic example of how, in a short space of time, the right window and door framing products can be used to create a visually appealing and practical family living space.
