Art, architecture and glazing converge in spectacular fashion at this Toorak home, where a top floor constructed from large panels of structural glazing has been adorned with artistic images. The liveable art theme continues inside the home where the combination of art and glazing have culminated in a visually stunning home, no doubt destined for award-winning status.

From the street, the second level cube-shaped living space turns heads due to its distinctive shape and decorative covering. To create the living space, walls of structural glazing were installed to act as a canvas for the artwork. Using a combination of Alspec’s McArthur 101.6mm Centre Pocket Framing and Hastings 550 Front Glazed Plant On System, each panel was meticulously measured and sized to ensure the images matched perfectly. A film, printed with the images of ancient Greek statues and the modern twist of designer graffiti, was used in the laminate level of each glass panel.

Within the home double height spaces are connected both through further art installations and strategically placed glazing to incorporate elements of light. A series of light wells have been used to illuminate living spaces and to highlight the art on display. Along the length of the home a section of overhead glazing has been used to construct a long narrow skylight which brings in natural light and draws attention to the gallery-style wall of artwork. The skylight was created using Hastings 500 Front Glazed Plant On System. With the use of adaptors, the front glazing can be fixed to aluminium, steel or timber, to cover the structure and create the desired impact.

In the home’s utility spaces, other Alspec products incorporated including a Torrens 45mm Commercial Shopfront Door for the laundry. Available in hinged, pivoted or sliding applications, the Torrens doors can accommodate a range of glass thicknesses up to 28mm in the double glazed option. Normally used in commercial buildings, the wide stile design of Torrens doors makes them an attractive addition for use in residential applications.

To provide openable windows without visible hardware, Alspec’s Top Hung Commercial Awning Windows were selected. With their concealed winder base and covers, the windows provide function without the visual interruption of an obvious winding mechanism. While the sash is inset of the framing to deliver a flush appearance, the overlapping internal and external seals will ensure the windows perform well in all weather conditions.
